How to Train Your Dragon : DVD released on October 15, 2010

A winning mixture of adventure, slapstick comedy, and friendship, How to Train Your Dragon rivals Kung Fu Panda as the most engaging and satisfying film DreamWorks Animation has produced. Hiccup (voice by Jay Baruchel) is a failure as a Viking: skinny, inquisitive, and inventive, he asks questions and tries out unsuccessful contraptions when he's supposed to be fighting the dragons that attack his village. His father, chief Stoick the Vast (Gerard Butler), has pretty much given up on his teenage son and apprenticed him to blacksmith Gobber (Craig Ferguson). Worse, Hiccup knows the village loser hasn't a chance of impressing Astrid (America Ferrera), the girl of his dreams and a formidable dragon fighter in her own right. When one of Hiccup's inventions actually works, he hasn't the heart to kill the young dragon he's brought down. He names it Toothless and befriends it, although he's been taught to fear and loathe dragons. Codirectors and cowriters Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois, who made Disney's delightful Lilo and Stitch, provide plenty of action, including vertiginous flying sequences, but they balance the pyrotechnics with moments of genuine warmth that make the viewer root for Hiccup's success. Many DreamWorks films get laughs from sitcom one-liners and topical pop culture references; as the humor in Dragon comes from the characters' personalities, it feels less timely and more timeless. Toothless chases the spot of sunlight reflected off Hiccup's hammer like a giant cat with a laser pointer; Hiccup uses his newly found knowledge (and an icky smoked eel) to defeat two small dragons--and impress the other kids. How to Train Your Dragon will be just as enjoyable 10 or 20 years from now as it is today.

Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs : DVD released on 1/5/2010

Judi and Ron Barrett's cloudy with a chance of meatballs is a lovely, a whimsical book about a small island where food falls from the sky like rain. The book serves as a starting point for the animation from Sony, 3-D digital cloudy with a chance of meatballs, which is not so much a narrative of the book as an exploration of what makes food that rain from the sky on a small island in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Flint (Bill Hader), a smart young inventor, with a reputation for the creations that went wrong, has recently completed a machine that he says turn water into food. Like his past failed inventions, new foods Flint conversion machine does not work as planned, and its initial test run ends by getting thrown into the sky where clouds form and rain begin to hamburgers. The burgers down the last attempt to destroy the Swallow Falls community to strengthen its absence, the sardine-dependent economy, but the mayor (Bruce Campbell), the initial anger quickly turns to greedy anticipation when it begins to realize that food falling from the sky could serve as an innovative tourist attraction. As all the people trapped redefining itself as "chew and swallow," Flint's only father (James Caan) remains skeptical about the invention of his son. Greed leads to some very strange weather events such as spaghetti and extra-giant mouthful of food, while a great professional opportunity for intelligent internal climate Sam Sparks (Anna Faris), who is going through an air television personality directed, also threaten to destroy the city and its inhabitants. In the end, only the collaborative efforts of Flint, his father, and Sam can save the city from chewing and swallowing from certain destruction of invention out of control. Cloudy with chance of meatballs is a fun, imaginative film that is well animated and very entertaining for children and adults. Rated PG for brief mild language, but adequate for most children 5 years and older.

9 (2009) : DVD released on 12/29/2009

Nine small rag dolls, sewn of jute and operation of the watch and glasses are all that stands in the way of the world to be struck by the machines. In fact, 9 starts, it seems that the machines have had their way with the Earth: this is a post-apocalyptic landscape without life, hope, or sunlight. 9 It is clear that the Director Shane Acker is willing to make an animated film that do not fire with the colors of Disney or Pixar mind - indeed, the main characters are killed before the movie halfway. Our hero is 9 (voiced by Elijah Wood), named for the number on the back, after awakening to consciousness confusing encountered with the survivors of puppets, such as pressing 1 (Christopher Plummer), the warrior as 7 (Jennifer Connelly), and the one-eyed comic 5 (John C. Reilly). That fight with the machines in a relentless (and eventually monotonous) series of battles, and the hardware of the explosion and the endless war has a tendency to crowd out any character development could have been created in the first minutes. No doubt film design is impressive and the characters are wonderfully expressive quality at first. But at some point it seems that machines have taken over the creation of films here, with tedious results.

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs opens with the family of prehistoric sewn-together to become a biological: Manny (voiced by Ray Romano) and his partner Ellie (Queen Latifah) are expecting a baby mammoth. Unfortunately, this makes Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo) and Diego the saber-toothed tiger (Denis Leary) feel left out. Diego, who worries he's losing his edge, he decides to go it alone, while Sid adopts three suspiciously large eggs has found through a crack in the ice. At this point, the film is dangerously cheesy - does anyone, especially a child, wants to see a movie for children about parenthood and middle age is coming? Fortunately, the eggs turn out to be dinosaur eggs from a pre-underworld of mammals, and when the mother T-Rex comes to rescue their loved little naughty, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs is transformed into a delicious comic adventure. The emotional side of the Ice Age movies has always been a little sickly, so it is wise that the dawn of the dinosaurs emphasis on physical comedy. Clearly, the animators were inspired by a wild fusion of Road Runner cartoons and Buster Keaton. Scratte's character, with their non-verbal, efforts to get past acorn monomaniac (twice in this film with the addition of a female equivalent) is just the most obvious reflection of this sensitivity. The animators have fun with the differences in scale between mammals and dinosaurs, and the introduction of a weasel of Australia upset named Buck (Simon Pegg, Shaun of the Dead) pushes throughout Loony Tune. Pixar that tug at our emotions intended Ice Age make you laugh out loud and does a good job of it.

Corinne (Barbie) is the daughter of a musketeer and grew up wanting to be a musketeer and hard training to become an excellent swordsperson. When it starts to Paris to join the Musketeers, until your cover letter does not win anything but laugh at Captain Treville and the all-male Musketeers. Forced to take a job as housekeeper of the castle, Corinne soon discovers that his three fellow housewives have also dreamed and trained to become musketeers. Even more surprising is that the senior housekeeper had dreams similar to those of a child. The elderly housekeeper provides training for the three young men, encouraging them to strive for what was an absolute impossibility of his generation. Like the prince is about to become king, strange accidents begin to occur around the castle - the Musketeers accidents men seem unable to avoid. Could these unfortunate events provide an opportunity for Corinne and her friends to show his extraordinary skill with the sword? Although the concept of Barbie as a sword-wielding musketeer may seem strange initially, the film is as credible as other productions of Barbie and Barbie is refreshing to see on paper a little less overtly "feminine. Barbie final quote sums it all: "The real courage is pursuing his dream, even when everyone says it's impossible." (Ages 3 to 7)
