Rachel Getting Married DVD : released on Mar.10, 09

Pitched between Robert Altman's A Wedding and Noah Baumbach's Margot at the Wedding - but more cautiously optimistic than both - Rachel Getting Married marks a change in the course of director Jonathan Demme. Granted, a few Oscar winners have had a more varied path. After a series of documentaries and remakes, the Silence of the Lambs Helmer tries his hand at the intimate chamber drama. With the help of actress Anne Hathaway and screenwriter Jenny Lumet, daughter of filmmaker Sidney, he pulls it off. The festivities kick into high gear once Kym (Hathaway, soiled with eyeliner and unkempt hair) takes a break from rehab for her sister, the big day. It soon becomes apparent that Kym, her wounded soul who hides behind a veil of sarcasm, as a resident Buchman's black sheep. The problem goes beyond drugs to a tragedy in which she played a role. As Kym, bride Rachel (Mad Men's Rosemary Dewitt), their parents (Bill Irwin and Debra Winger), groom Sidney (TV on the Radio's Tunde Adebimpe), and the rest of the Bohemian Connecticut brood struggle with the past, marriage remain rewarded by the performance of the past as collaborators Demme Sister Carol East (Something Wild) and Robyn Hitchcock (Storefront Hitchcock). The time between the reception and after-party contain humor, affection, and painful revelations. In the press notes, Demme says he and filmmaker Declan Quinn (in America) has tried for a movie that looked like "The most beautiful home movie ever made." The use of handheld cameras and believably flawed characters, they have done that.

Milk (2008) DVD ; released on March 10, 2009

If a famous person, as the nation's first openly gay city supervisor male, inspired a controversial book (The Mayor of Castro Street) and Oscar-winning documentary (The Times of Harvey Milk), a biopic may seem superfluous at best. Acquisition of Bryan Singer and Oliver Stone, Gus Van Sant, last picture was the more experimental Paranoid Park, together with such grace, he will suggest the concern. In contrast to Randy Shilts' biography, which begins at the beginning, Dustin Lance Black's script begins in 1972, just as Milk (Sean Penn, Wrought in a fine performance) and his friend Scott (James Franco, as well), moving from New York to San Francisco. Milk opens a camera shop on Castro that a safe haven for victims of discrimination, convince him to enter politics. With each race he runs, Harvey's relationship with Scott unravels further. Finally, he wins, and the real battle begins when Milk is Proposition 6, which denies equal rights for homosexuals. He does what he can to rally politicians like George Moscone (Victor Garber) and Dan White (Josh Brolin). While the mayor is prepared, the conservative board member has concerns, and after the milk is not back from a White's pet projects, the die is cast, leading to the murder of two beloved figures. If Van Sant Harvey explains the film in all its complexity (he was, for example, a very funny man), Milk also serves as an enticement to field-oriented activism, showing how an ordinary boy raised everyone around him, especially Cleve Jones ( Emile Hirsch), the ex-street hustler to the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial. Released in the aftermath of Proposition 8, California anti-gay-marriage amendment, Milk is inspiring the best way: a person and make a difference, but the fight is far from over.

Summer Heights High DVD : released on Feb.24, 09

Australian writer / performer Chris Lilley is specialized in the comedy of narcissism. All three of his characters in the mockumentary series Summer Heights High are blind, extremely self-absorbed: Mr. G, a drama teacher who writes and directs his own musical, Ja'mie, a preening 16-year-old from a wealthy private school that her year positions on a public school as purgatory, and Jonah, a Tongan juvenile delinquent who is already two other schools. The series'8 episodes follow these three as they try to find some form of fame and adulation.Mr. G battle for a musical about a student who recently died of a drug overdose ... only ever have a drama teacher whose heroic dog dies in an accident; Ja'mie hard would stage a formal dance and will lie, bribe and manipulate to do it, and Jonah wants his Posse Break Dancing, but he is simply not State to the insult of his teachers and fighting with other students. While Mr G and Ja'mie are blinkered samples Jonah Verge tragically, as he stumbles towards the self. The depth of Lilley's creations is impressive, as the comedian loses itself completely in these characters. Still, some viewers may be more aggravating than fun, but a hint of self-consciousness may have a bit easier to spend time. But for anyone who connects with Lilley's comedy, Summer Heights High is a feast of juicy, unfiltered, disaster aging conceit.

Beverly Hills Chihuahua DVD ; released on Mar.3, 09

Beverly Hills Chihuahua Director Raja Gosnell takes place back on the talking dog Beat (after his live-action Scooby-Doo and Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleased), this time in an ambitious, tongue-in-cheek comedy with a fun cast to the screen and voice actors. Piper Perabo plays Rachel, niece of an eccentric Beverly Hills (Jamie Lee Curtis) who spends much of her fortune spoiled Chloe (voiced by Drew Barrymore), a pampered Chihuahua to pace through this world with their booty on the paws. Chloe gets dog-napped Rachel during a vacation in Mexico, and finds protection in a German Shepherd named outsider Delgado (Andy Garcia), a painful secret in his past. Both in and out of a lot of abrasions, tries to stay in front of a vicious dog (Edward James Olmos), for the head of an illegal gambling syndicate melee. Computer repercussions of the film many four-legged critters characters speak in a position to jump on train and wagons to the top of the heroine in the Indiana Jones-like ancestral castle of the Chihuahua breed. The comedy is crisp and child-friendly, the story of Chloe rise of stupidity in Canine authenticity, and the film is amazing, all very ambitious to win.

The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice DVD ; released on Feb.24, 09

The third installment of the franchise over to the Library maintains (Indiana) Jones. It's simple, friendly, family-friendly entertainment without any Crystal Skull-esque disappointment. And it has vampires! No sentimental swooning vampire high school, either, but the Big Kahuna of bloodsuckers - Dracula! Noah Wyle returns as Flynn Carsen, the librarian-trote battles supernatural forces, while ensuring the world for the mythical artifacts mammoth (and secret) Metropolitan Library. However, a disappointed Flynn needed a vacation after the demands of his job cost him another relationship with a woman who can not cope with the "wild and unpredictable lifestyle that dates back to a librarian." When it comes to New Orleans becomes involved with a former KGB agent of the scandalous Russian plot to restore the former glory using the eponymous relic to revive Dracula to lead an army of "soldiers unkillable." Throw in a beautiful French chanteuse (Stana Katic), with a secret (suffice it to say that when she sings about how she might want to feel the sun again, it is no joke) and a teacher of disabled and vampire expert (Bruce Davison) and the stage is set for a good old B movie (well, B +) pleasures, including the corny jokes and special effects to work hard for the money. Wyle attractiveness, as a character in Flynn, "is very convincing as a hapless loser," and received invaluable support from comic Jane Curtin, as cost-scrutinizinglibrary manager Charlene and Bob Newhart as a mentor Flynn, Judson which encourages the reluctant hero to "embrace their destiny." Hopefully, that means another adventure librarian. If not, the Judas Chalice trilogy leads to a satisfying conclusion.
