Defiance : DVD released on June 2, 2009

Three wild committed actors filling the role of the Bielski brothers, the Jewish partisans who escaped in the forests of Eastern Europe during the Second World War. Daniel Craig (with a break of 007 duty) is Tuvia, the leader of a group of refugees that eventually more than a thousand, Liev Schreiber is Sister, the antagonistic warrior, and Jamie Bell is Asael, a peace no less dedicated to the survival of community. The three actors give life to director Edward Zwick's account of this little-known chapter of Jewish resistance against the Holocaust, which otherwise plays more like a history lesson than a thoroughbred film. The best movie performance is its strong location work in Lithuania - as the community's house in the forest, the landscape is a major player in the drama at hand, and the change of seasons is mapped bone chilling detail . Schreiber manages to skew a little humor in this otherwise sober company, and Daniel Craig creates an unusual character: a kind of anti-Bond, a hero whose body is all too fallible and whose decisions are sometimes hesitant or morally compromised. It is a rare hero in the Second World War movie that tends to draw scenes from the steps to them, but that is what Craig does. More than likely the film is the most important achievement will send the curious to read the history of the Bielski brothers, and why this issue in the chronicles of the Holocaust.

The Closer : The complete fourth season : DVD released on May 26, 09

The 4th season of The Closer Sedgwick notes in super form, as the scattered, ditzy mummy's girl with a weakness for junk food and a singular focus when it comes to getting perps talk. But the power of The Closer goes far beyond Sedgwick as formidable as it is. The ensemble cast is stellar and very human and credible. Johnson's fellow agents (including Johnson is finally one of the boys, albeit in frilly skirts) are set-out and battle their own demons. This season viewers get to know Johnson's fiancé, FBI agent Fritz Howard (Jon Tenney), much better with his "paranormal" sister (the unforgettable Amy Sedaris) and Brenda's doting parents, and families prepare for the happy couple impending wedding - if serial killers and terrorist plots will only give them a break. The box contains the entire season, along with wonderful extras, including a memorable blooper reel (the cast really seem to have a blast shooting this series, as viewers have long suspected, and not miss guest star Jennifer Coolidge's R-rated ad lib cafe scene). There is also an informative Featurette with Corey Reynolds (the Hunky Sgt. Gabriel) and LAPD Det. Mike Berchem, an adviser to the series, deleted scenes and more. Thank you - Thank you so much!

Valkyrie : DVD released on May 19, 2009

Unpretentious and dramatically simple, Valkyrie is a suspenseful yet ennobling story of the last attempt to murder Adolf Hitler prior to the end of the Second World War. Tom Cruise is effective if a bit opaque as hero Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, who channels his anger at Hitler's atrocities and mismanagement of the war through a secret organization bent on killing the Führer. When Stauffenberg out hits on the idea of linking Hitler's death with an official policy for the protection of Berlin during a government crisis - a plan called "Valkyrie" - the group has a post-assassination coup could be covered by the rapid implementation of the plan. History tells us the story, of course, and Hitler himself slain months later. But that does not stop Cruise and director Bryan Singer of approaching the film as a thinking person thriller, told from the conspirators' camp, where the result of their actions were uncertain for several tense hours.
In the tradition of The Great Escape, Valkyrie is a war film full of familiar faces, including Kenneth Branagh, Terence Stamp, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy and Eddie Izzard.

Underworld : Rise of the Lycan, DVD released on May 12, 09

This prequel to Len Wiseman’s Underworld and Underworld: Evolution is distinctively different, especially minus the nimble vampire warrior star, Selene (Kate Beckinsale). Underworld: Rise of the Lycans takes its cues from the vampire/werewolf battles that occur in the other films, but director Patrick Tatopoulos focuses here on the young werewolf Lucian's (Michael Sheen) rise to leadership.
